Dr. Shiyi Chen is the founding Dean of the College of Engineering and a University Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Peking University , People’s Republic of China . He has held the Dean position since March 2005 . He has also been Dean of the Graduate School of Peking University since January 2011 . He is also the Director of the Center for Computational Science and Engineering for the University .
Prof. Chen received his Ph .D . from Peking University in 1987 . He was an Oppenheimer Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1989 . He then joined the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos in 1990 as a research staff member . In 1994 , he became a research staff member at the Department of Physical Sciences of IBM T . J . Watson Research Center . From 1997 to 1999 , he served as the Deputy Director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory . He was the Alonzo G . Decker Jr . Chair in Engineering and Science at the Department of Mechanical Engineering , and a Professor in the Department of Statistics and Applied Mathematics and Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Johns Hopkins University from 1999 to 2007 . He was the Chair for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at JHU from 2002 to 2004 . Chen is a Fellow of American Physical Society , a Fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory and a Fellow of UK Institute of Physics . Prof . Chen has published more than 160 scientific papers , edited 3 books and has SCI citations in excess of 5000 times .
Dr. Chen has received numerous awards , including Chang‐Jiang Professorship from the Chinese Ministry of Education , Outstanding Young Researcher Award from the National Natural Science Foundation of China , Fellow Prize from Los Alamos National Laboratory , Research and Development Magazine Award for the 100 Most‐Significant Technical Products of the Year in 1989 and 1994 , and External Honor Recognition Award from IBM . Dr. Chen has been an Editor or Associate Editor for 9 international journals , including Journal of Computational Physics , Journal of Turbulence , and Communications in Computational Physics . He has given more than 200 academic lectures worldwide and organized more than 20 international conferences . Dr. Chen has served as chair or member for many academic committees and organizations , in particular for American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics , Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics , American Physical Society Division of Computational Physics and Chinese Association of Mechanics . Dr. Chen was the Chief Adviser of Exa Corporation and he is a Board member of Institute for Physical Sciences in Washington DC . He is the Vice Chair of Academic Committee for the National Key Laboratory for Turbulence and Complex Systems in China; a member of Advisory Committee for National Key Laboratory for Nonlinear Mechanics , Chinese Academy of Sciences , and Pei‐Yuan Zhou Center of Applied Mathematics , Tsinghua University .
